Program Development Officer
Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) is a non-profit international development agency, working in Asia and Africa to find sustainable solutions to the complex problems causing global poverty. AKFC concentrates on a number of specific development challenges in health, education, rural development and civil society. In Canada, AKFC raises funds, builds partnerships with Canadian institutions, and promotes discussion and learning on international development issues. Established in 1980, AKFC is a registered Canadian charity and an agency of the worldwide Aga Khan Development Network.
AKFC is seeking an experienced Program Development Officer to join AKFC’s Program Team to support strategic program development. The AKFC Program Team manages a significant portfolio of projects across multiple sectors and multiple geographies in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Reporting to the Deputy Director, Programs, this position will work closely with AKDN’s global leadership, field implementing agencies and AKFC’s Program Team member to design new programs, and prepare donor proposals and concepts. This is a 1 year position.
Manage all aspects of new proposal development and submission including coordination/drafting of AKDN financial and narrative components.
Be a lead or contributing writer for AKFC’s proposals.
Support the coordination of strategic program development activities, including liaison with AKDN global leadership, AKDN implementing agencies, AKFC’s Program, Public Affairs and Finance Teams, and as relevant Canadian partners.
Develop concept papers, proposals and proposal budgets for donor.
Facilitate and participate in programmatic design consultations with field offices and stakeholders.
Prepare internal summary documents for senior management.
Extracts lessons from previous programs or good practice to inform new program design.
Your Qualifications and Attributes:
Demonstrated success as lead writer or proposal manager for a reputable cooperating agency or nonprofit organization working in international development.
Master’s Degree in International Development and/or other relevant disciplines.
Minimum five (5) years relevant work experience in Canada and overseas, including substantial experience in proposal writing and project design.
Exceptional analytical and writing skills.
Experience facilitating input from multiple actors to produce a coherent product.
Sound interpersonal skills and the proven ability to communicate articulately, both verbally and in writing.
Excellent time management skills, ability to manage projects and prioritize tasks effectively with the ability to apply well-informed judgement to situations.
Ability to take initiative and to work on various projects at once, and deal with change.
Knowledge of international development.
Demonstrated intercultural competence and ability to adapt professional skills to fit local conditions and constraints.
Dynamic, collaborative, able to work in challenging contexts with patience, perseverance and flexibility.
Willingness and ability to travel to countries which are characterized by fragility and insecurity.
Adept with standard technical and computer tools commonly used in office applications, including Microsoft Office Programs and Skype.
