Delivered over four days, in English only, the Career Access for Newcomers (CAN) Program offers a group-based learning environment where job seekers have the opportunity to learn and practice the skills needed to undertake a successful job search in Canada.
You will learn about job search methods, recognizing and describing skills and career accomplishments, transferable skills, labour market research tools and why it is important for your job search. You will also learn how write a targeted resume and cover letter to apply for jobs.
How the program will help you succeed:
First half of every month
“Prior to attending the World Skills workshops, I hurriedly prepared and submitted my resume without necessarily ensuring it matched the job descriptions of the jobs I was applying for. I learned that my resume had to include some things specifically requested on the job descriptions. I also learnt about the National Occupational Classification and labour market indicators which provided insights on how my industry was faring and salary range amongst other things. I am now working as a Senior Analyst.”
“The most beneficial for my situation was Interview preparation. Especially because I was looking for employment in the public sector, I needed to know some keywords for the interview. My employment counsellor sent me a “competency profiles and examples” file that was very helpful. Also, I had a mock interview which was very helpful and I appreciate that they responded to my request quickly because my interview was rescheduled last minute.”
“The workshops organized by World Skills helped me with tailoring my resume to job descriptions, writing cover letters, asking for informational interviews, and preparing for the actual job interview. My first interview preparation with World Skills landed me a job as an Operations Business Analyst”
