City of Ottawa – How to get a job?

Do you want to work for the City? Certainly, the nearly 100 World Skills clients in the “How to get a job with the City” information session on April 19th do.

So what’s stopping people? For many years, one big obstacle was the City’s antiquated job board – in HR parlance, its Applicant Tracking System (ATS).

In October, the City launched a new Web site and a new, much easier to use, state-of-the art ATS. The information session a live guided tour of the ATS and a step-by-step demonstration of how to use it.

City Staffing Officer, Kyle Devine, was the tour guide. He focused on the first and most important step – creating a profile. At each stage of the process, he not only demonstrated what to do, but explained why it is important to fill out certain sections, notably the one that asks about one’s membership in an employment equity group.

Later, he explained how to create a winning application, and passed on tips and tricks to help you to do well at the interview and to stand out from the crowd. And answered questions, lots of questions.

His final message was that for all your questions there is an HR Service Centre ready to answer them and help you use the ATS and to apply for jobs.
