Champions for World Skills: Coaching for Success!
Champions for World Skills Coaching for Success! is an initiative which seeks to engage local employers and other stakeholders to be advocates for newcomers and to use coaching as a strategy to advance their integration into the Ottawa labour market. At the launch, you will hear inspiring stories of employers and individuals who have effectively championed programs at World Skills and coached internationally trained individuals towards building their careers in Canada.
Networking and lack of sector specific knowledge are two of the biggest barriers for newcomers to secure employment. Professionals in Ottawa can provide support to our newcomers through various forms of coaching and employers can gain access to the largest pool of newcomers in Ottawa. Employers like Business Development Canada, TD Bank, Epocal, The City of Ottawa, and the Federal Government are already tapping into this pool! Since 2010, 325 newcomers have secured paid internships with the Federal Government through the Federal Internship for Newcomers Program.
“Sharing my knowledge gives me a great feeling that I cannot describe yet,” – Andreea Glavan. She is one of our staff at World Skills Employment Centre who was inspired to start a basic computer training class for newcomers who did not have computer skills. She was joined by Nabila Islam, a champion volunteer for World Skills who has just completed her two years of Computer Science at Algonquin College. Sixteen newcomers have benefitted from this training. Champions for World Skills share their knowledge and expertise to help newcomers integrate in Ottawa.
“Thank you World Skills and TD for making such an opportunity available to us. I believe this program is a role model for many organizations in Canada to showcase their corporate social responsibility towards the community and the new Canadians, and the positive role they can play to help build and support a strong economy and community of practice,” – Sam El-Halawani, Mentee.
Other champions such as James Baker, Managing Partner at Keynote Group, has championed professional coaching services for all of our staff at World Skills Employment Centre in the areas of LinkedIn Training and Business Development.
