Employment Law 101 Information Session January 21, 2021
It’s never good to be in debt to a lawyer. But World Skills owes Malini Vijaykumar a large debt of gratitude.
On Thursday, January 21, Malini Vijaykumar, an expert employment lawyer with Nelligan O’Brien Payne LLP, one of the top employment law firms in the city, presented a brilliant “Employment 101” session to about 25 women in World Skills’ Empowering Visible Minority Newcomer Women program and almost as many World Skills staff.
Malini customized her presentation to newcomers who are finally starting to get jobs and are coming face-to-face with employment contracts of various kinds, and the myriad facets of Ontario employment law – as well as the evolving impact of COVID-19 on the workplace.
Hitting the perfect balance between breadth and depth, Malini covered the most important topics in just the right amount of detail in her talk and answering questions afterward. In addition to outlining the key pieces of legislation and common law provided links plain language guides to Ontario’s Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Act, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Malini also told our clients and staff about sources of free legal advice and assistance, such as her own firm’s helpline:
- Nelligan Law Helpline: 613-231-8334 (information on COVID-19 and Human Rights in Employment)
As well as:
- Law Society Referral Service: findlegalhelp.ca (a free ½-hour consultation with a lawyer on any area of law.
- Community Legal Services of Ottawa: 613-241-7008 (free legal assistance)
Malini received rave reviews from clients and staff alike. In short, she hit it out of the park!
