Making Change One Community at a Time!

United Way East Ontario is working to break down barriers and address social issues within our local communities. Supporting Prescott-Russell, Ottawa, Lanark and Renfrew, United Way strives for solutions that improve lives and create opportunities for those who need it most.

On May 25th, Human Resources Coordinator Joanne Brakis met with the Empowering Visible Minority Newcomer Women program participants to discuss employment opportunities and tips on how to stand out within their applications.

Joanne addressed how she tackles the hiring process, expressing the importance of a meaningful cover letters, the types of positions at United Way, and the specific qualifications. Joanne let us know how applications are pre-screened and highlighted the top required skills that they’re seeking.

Regarding foreign experience not being considered, she reassured the women that United Way East Ontario values their backgrounds, whether Canadian or not. Joanne encouraged participants to apply to positions even if they do not have all the qualifications because transferable skills matter! Throughout the session, participants understood to frame themselves and use the language the employer is looking for in the application.

Thank you, Joanne Brakis, for the introduction to United Way EO. Congratulations to our Recruitment Team Fatima Saadeddine, Haguer Abdelmoniem, and Andy Rapoch for another successful targeted recruitment event!
