Employers Connect with Newcomers to Share Advice and Insights

It was a day of learning and development for World Skills clients who spent their time meeting and connecting with Ottawa-based employers on December 3, 2019.

The two-part event began in the morning with an information session with CPA Ontario that introduced our clients to the value and benefits of obtaining their CPA designation. Ghada Tajeddine, Student Recruiter at CPA Ontario, provided a wealth of information on the designation process while guest speakers David Lao, Sergii Bilyi and Robert Mawoko shared their stories about obtaining their CPA designation and the opportunities this provided for their careers.

In the afternoon, World Skills clients had a chance to meet hiring managers and coaches from 14 different companies based in the city, including IBM, Shopify, EY, HAYS, Ruckify, Recruiting in Motion, RBC, Millennium 1 Solutions, Syntronic, Gowling WLG and Canada Post

“It was amazing to meet with such a wide range of employers to learn about their available and future opportunities, their hiring processes and what skill sets they are looking for,” said Chinyere Ubani, a newcomer who has worked as a Financial Analyst in her home country and is now seeking opportunities in her field in Ottawa.

The participants also received coaching and feedback about their employment goals, job search strategies, resume, transferable skills and interview skills.

Events like these are valuable to job seekers who get access to a lot of hiring managers from several different companies at a single venue,” said Amit Ner, a newcomer looking for opportunities in the Accounting and Banking sector in the capital.

A special thank you to all the participants and the employers for making this a successful event!
